About Me

I'm currently in my senior year pursuing Computer Science at Grinnell College. With a passion for both technologies/coding and visual art (and physics), I have been working on many projects that combine these areas. I aspire to become a VR computer graphics researcher, or a Software engineer for Film visual effects (because they are awesome!). If what I'm writing here intrigues you, we probably have some common interests and visions for the future of technologies. So read on and let me share my past experiences with you!
He enjoys solving problems with code and building awesome stuffs.
He loves painting and creating flipbook animation or 3D models from his imagination.
On a Saturday afternoon, he might sing while playing his acoustic guitar, wrestle with an insidious segmentation fault, or simply stare into the empty Midwest prairie and question the nature of his reality. Now go ahead and learn more [about Mike].

Grinnell College

Computer Science September 2015 - May 2019

I feel the immense gratitude for receiving a quality liberal arts education from Grinnell College in these rather important years of my life. With an open curriculum and wide-ranging course selection, I had the opportunity to hone my technical skills in physics and computer science while also immersing myself in the world of visual art in painting and sculpture classes. My curiosity in many other fields such as economics, finance, music and languages was also satiated by the freedom to choose classes and the encounter with knowledgeable and caring professors.

Raffles Junior College

A-Level Coursework with Raffles Diploma January 2013 - December 2014

With a four-year governmental scholarship, I traveled south to the beautiful city-state of Singapore. On this surprisingly multicultual and inclusive island, I was fortunate to receive my Secondary Education at Raffles Junior College, a leading institution in Asia. I completed rigorous A-level coursework in Economics, Higher Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, General Paper and Project Work. I was selected into the Physics Raffles Academy (RA) class where we underwent trainings for the Singapore Physics Olympiads. In addition, I attended a semester in National University of Singapore (NUS) studying Linear Algebra. Outside our main curriculum, I was also the vice-president of the Raffles Art Club. We organized weekly workshops, Annual Art Exhibitions and community involved projects to raise awareness of art in different communities.

Goldman Sachs (Asia) LLC

Summer Analyst at Engineering Division June 2018 - August 2018

A 10-week Summer internship programme, where we use Goldman Sachs in-house technologies to build usable, scalable and sustainable services and platforms to help investors gauge their equity holdings and trading positions.

Grinnell AppDev

Front-end Engineer September 2016 - Present

I work at Grinnell AppDev, our college's one and only organization geared towards crafting user-friendly and intuitive apps to help students on campus with a variety of mundane tasks. We published apps for checking daily dining hall menus accompanied with calorie level calculations; we also published apps for campus activites including game nights and speaker series; we even have a campus directory app in store for those who'd like to "stalk" peers and professors. Currently, I'm the Front-end Engineer developping our latest Publications app, which is basically a Newsstand app for all of our student periodicals and magazines. I work closely with my team and the backend engineers to architect a smooth experience for our demanding users from college.

Epidemic: Statistics-learning Classroom Game

Unity Game Developer May 2017 - August 2017

Over the summer of 2017, my dream came true when I snatched an opportunity to develop an educational game for our statistics and CS professors. I can finally utilize both my creative and technical brains to build a game, using C#, in Unity. How absolutely exciting. With a team of six, I trudged forward with all the nasty issues with Unity. We created a statistics learning game based on the acclaimed game Pandemic. The backstory is that in the tranquil town of StatsVille (apprarently the most creative name we could come up at the time), an Epidemic broke out and all the residents flocked into the hospital seeking treatments. There are two mainstream treatments with varying chemical compositions. The player needs to figure out which treatment is more effective through experiments, which I admit, does not sound humane at all in the context of an Epidemic outbreak. The game aims to educate players on the concepts of fundamental statistical concepts like sample versus population, mean and standard deviation, basic distributions and false positive/ negatives. I was so thrilled that I got to design the overall architecture of the game, draw and animate the graphics, and create a server endpoint to connect to our database for user data collection and analysis. It was a challenging but rewarding summer. Well spent, Mike.

Grinnell Physics and Computer Science Department

Teaching Assistant September 2016 - Present

I love to give back by contributing my knowledge and care about my peers. I have been mentoring introductory physics courses and helping professors with setting up lab equipments for a few semesters. I am currently an evening tutor for multiple computer science courses. I enjoy explaining concepts to students and understanding their unique difficulties. Everyone's brain is so fascinatingly different that we tend to approach problems in very divergent ways. Attempting to put myself in my mentees' shoes makes me a better teacher and provides me with a much firmer grasp on the concepts.

A list of skills to "impress" people if anyone's interested. But no, I surely have a larger skillset than what's included here. For example, I can whistle and beatbox. I'm also lefthanded and I love my right brain.
